Academic visit │NCKU Orthopaedic Delegation Visits Mahidol University and Chulalongkorn University in Thailand

A delegation from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) visited Mahidol University and Chulalongkorn University in Thailand February 19th-21st, 2024, for a scientific, clinical and technological experience exchange. Professor Po-Ting Wu, Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Department, at NCKU Hospital, led the delegation,  with accompany of Associate Professor Kuo-Yuan Huang and Assistant Professor Che-Chia Hsu.

On February 19th, the delegation visited Mahidol University. NCKU and Mahidol University have a long history of close collaboration, with multiple MOUs signed at the department and college levels. NCKU has even established its Thailand overseas hub at Mahidol University. The NCKU delegation's visit was warmly received by Mahidol University, further deepening the cooperative relationship between the two universities and strengthening their friendship.

In the morning, the delegation was invited to attend the morning meeting at Siriraj Hospital, affiliated with Mahidol University. During the meeting, the NCKU Orthopaedic team gave presentations on their respective areas of expertise.

After the morning meeting, the delegation had breakfast with Professor Keerati, Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Siriraj Hospital, and toured the hospital's Clinical Skills Simulation Center, Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Center, and the Human tissue bank which is only in Thailand. The delegation was impressed by Siriraj Hospital's well-equipped clinical teaching facilities.

In the afternoon, the delegation visited the main campus of Mahidol University, accompanied by President Professor Banchong Mahaisavariya. They were received with the highest honors, visiting the university's main campus, thematic museums, supercomputer center, and Prince Mahidol Hall. The delegation was amazed by Mahidol University's strong research foundation and beautiful campus environment.

In the evening, Professor Banchong Mahaisavariya hosted the delegation at an exquisite Chinese restaurant. During the dinner, Professor Banchong Mahaisavariya shared his academic journey, family life, philosophy of education, and insights on AI technology. The delegation had an in-depth conversation with Professor Banchong Mahaisavariya, who also generously shared his valuable experiences.

On February 20th, the delegation visited the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Chulalongkorn University. After giving a professional presentation, the delegation listened to the introductions from the Chair of the Department of Joint Reconstruction and the Head of the Spine Division.

The delegation was impressed by the advanced equipment and facilities of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Chulalongkorn University. The "Demonstration ward" located in the ward area was particularly noteworthy, as it serves as an excellent educational tool for patients recovering from orthopaedic surgery. By providing patients with accurate medical concepts and physical demonstrations, the ward helps patients better understand their recovery process and take an active role in their rehabilitation.

In the evening, Professor Aree Tanavalee, the Head of the Department of Joint Reconstruction at Chulalongkorn University, hosted a banquet for the delegation. During the meal, both sides shared their experiences in international orthopaedics and academic ethics. The visit ended on a cheerful note, with a successful conclusion in a pleasant atmosphere.

This visit was a significant academic exchange between the NCKU Orthopaedic team and Mahidol University and Chulalongkorn University. It not only enhanced the friendship between the two universities, but also laid a good foundation for future cooperation. Through visits, exchanges, and discussions, the delegation gained a deeper understanding of the teaching, research, and medical work of Mahidol University and Chulalongkorn University. Both sides expressed their hope to further strengthen cooperation in the future to promote the development of orthopaedic medicine.
