Academic visit │ KMITL School of Engineering Visits NCKU Medical Device Innovation Center (MDIC)

KMITL and NCKU Biomedical Engineering have built a strong and impactful collaborative relationship.
Under the leadership of Prof. Wen-Tai Chiu as department chair, he proactively facilitated bilateral internships between NCKU BME and KMITL, resulting in over 20 students taking part in this enriching program in the last two years. Furthermore, NCKU and KMITL BME solidified their partnership by signing a MOU for a (3+2) Bachelor and Master Collaborative Degree, showcasing their commitment to education and innovation.

On February 12, 2025, a delegation from the School of Engineering at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL), Thailand, visited the Medical Device Innovation Center (MDIC) at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). The visit began with a warm welcome from Prof. Wen-Tai Chiu, Associate Vice President for Research & Development at NCKU, underscoring the value of their collaboration and the promising future ahead.

Prof. Chih-Han Chang, the former MDIC Director provided a comprehensive introduction of MDIC at Taiwan's first university-based Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO). This CDMO integrates resources from the Comparative Medicine Research Center, the Medical Device Innovation Center (MDIC), and the Department of Oncology.

During the visit, Prof. Chang mentioned MDIC's mission to drive medical device innovation, startup incubation, and effectively translate research into impactful healthcare solutions.

The delegation also visited the MDIC Navigator Marketplace Lab, a collaborative platform designed to foster and integrate research and clinical applications. Dr. Chen-Hsun Weng, Head of MDIC’s Administrative Team, shared valuable insights into how the lab accelerates medical startups.

This visit proved to be a significant stepping stone for academic and industrial exchange between KMITL and NCKU. It laid the groundwork for potential future collaborations in medical technology and engineering, highlighting the mutual benefits of sharing knowledge and expertise in these essential fields.
